Why Small Steps Lead to Big Wins: The Power of Micro-Commitments in Growing Your Business

I swore to NOT touch a moving box ever again, then how in the world am I here helping my cousin pack and move a week after?!

It started so innocently. “Hey, can you help me move a lamp?” I figured, sure, that’s a small ask—easy to say yes to, right? Well, one thing led to another, and before I knew it, I was knee-deep in bubble wrap and boxes.

That small "yes" snowballed into a much bigger commitment.

Now, I’m not saying we’re all doomed to move endless couches and boxes for friends, but there’s a lesson here.

This same principle works in growing your business. Just like moving that lamp snowballs into packing an entire apartment, small, manageable steps in business can lead to huge transformations.

It’s all about breaking down the overwhelm and building momentum, one tiny action at a time.

In business, small steps build momentum, and before you know it, those tiny actions lead to significant results.

That small, simple “yes” is how most big tasks get done. That’s the power of a micro-commitment.

What is a ‘Micro-Commitment’, anyway?

It’s a tiny, low-risk action that doesn’t feel like a big deal. It’s the easiest “yes” someone can give. It’s not about asking someone to make a giant leap; it’s about nudging them forward with something so small they almost can’t say no.

In business, this could be as simple as getting someone to sign up for a newsletter, download a freebie, or click on a quick survey. These small actions build trust and open the door for bigger commitments—like buying your product or booking your service.

This reminds me of something I’ve learned from one of my biggest inspirations in the business world, Alex Hormozi. He talks a lot about how “small, incremental action compounded over time will always lead to significant results.”

This couldn’t be more true when it comes to growing your business. Hormozi’s approach isn’t about taking massive leaps—it's about consistently showing up and stacking small wins that lead to the big victories.

In sales and marketing, it’s often the smallest 'yes' that leads to the bigger 'yes.'

It’s all about making it easy to get started and keeping the momentum going—no overwhelm, just steady progress.

Why It Works: The Psychology Behind Micro-Commitments

So why does this work? It’s all about psychology.

When someone takes even the smallest action—like moving that “lamp” or giving their email address—they’re more likely to keep going. Each small step builds momentum.

It’s called the commitment-consistency principle—the more we say "yes" to something small, the more we want to stay consistent with that choice.

It’s like going to the gym. The hardest part is showing up, right? But once you’re there, you’re more likely to finish the workout.

The same goes for business. Once your customers take one small step—signing up for your newsletter, clicking on a link—they’re primed to keep going and eventually say "yes" to your bigger offer.

How to Use Micro-Commitments in Your Business Today

Here are a few easy ways to introduce micro-commitments into your customer journey:

  • Offer a Freebie: Give your audience something low-risk to commit to—whether it’s a downloadable guide, checklist, or free mini-course. This starts the relationship without overwhelming them.

  • Create Engaging Content: Ask them to take a small action, like clicking on an article, sharing your post, or answering a quick question. The simpler the action, the better.

  • Simplify Your Sales Funnel: Instead of going straight for the sale, guide them through smaller actions first. Ask for a consultation, a quiz completion, or even just an email signup.

  • Start Conversations: One of the easiest micro-commitments? Ask your audience to reply to an email or DM with their thoughts. Once they’ve engaged with you, they’re more likely to continue the conversation—and business.

If you take one thing away from this, let it be this👇:

Stop trying to move mountains all at once.

It’s the small, consistent steps that lead to big results. Whether you’re growing your customer base, scaling your business, or just trying to get unstuck, micro-commitments are the way to do it.

So, what’s your next small step? Maybe it’s applying this strategy to your own business, or maybe it’s simply reflecting on what’s been holding you back from those big wins.

Either way, remember: the power of micro-commitments could be the missing link between where you are now and where you want to be.
